I am grateful to a number of people with whom discussions about the exile Latvian population have been long and fruitful over the years. Particularly insightful give-and-take was had with Dr. Valters Nollendorfs, Professor Emeritus of the University of Wisconsin and now Chairman of the Board of the Museum of the Occupation in Riga, Latvia; and with Dr. Jānis Krēsliņš, jun., Senior Academic Librarian for Research Affairs at the National Library of Sweden, Stockholm. My thanks also go to the Latvia National Library in Riga, Latvia, and the staff of its periodicals section; to the University Libraries of Iowa State University and the University of Iowa for use of their periodicals and secondary sources; and to the Library of the Latvian Center “Garezers” in Three Rivers, Michigan, for permission to examine its collection of Latvian periodicals. I am also grateful to the editors of the “Between Two Worlds” series, Drs. Martyn Housden and Gustavs Strenga, for their close reading of the manuscript and comments about it, and to the Senior Acquisitions Editor at Verlag Ferdinand Schőning, Dr. Diethard Sawicki, Brill Deutschland, for his encouragement and help in the production process of the book. I owe my wife, Dr. Barbara S. Plakans, an immense debt for several readings of the manuscript-in-progress, her comments on it, the application to it of her editorial skills, for the preparation of the index, and for support during what turned out to be a very long project. Finally, the translations in the text from Latvian into English, except where otherwise noted, are my own.
