Abstract

Princess Pipa or Pipara, concubine or wife of Emperor Gallienus, is a character little known about and from only three sources, all of them heirs to the supposed Emmansche Kaisergeschichte. From these, we follow the trail to a literary model applied to certain empresses in imperial historiography, especially the empress Eudoxia, Arcadius’ wife.
