Abstract

Karl Lagerfeld’s Haute Couture collection Paris-Byzance (2010–2011) or the novel Purple Shroud by Stella Duffy (published in 2012) have revealed that Empress Theodora is in vogue. Coming from humble origins and a misguided youth, she was not as powerful as Sophia or Zoe, although more attractive and advanced. This is evidenced by her protection for women and children, her resolute character, intelligent and practical handing of public affairs such as that of the Monophysite problem. Perhaps this is where Procopius’ hostility comes from.
