Storms and thunderstorms, distress at sea and shipwrecks, attacks by pirates, disorientation or stranding on a foreign coast - such and other motifs are often encountered in experience reports or literary representations of ship trips in the various cultural and religious contexts of the Mediterranean region.
Maritime hagiography is particularly suitable for transcultural and interdisciplinary studies. The volume brings together contributions on the relationships between religion, piety and the sea from the perspective of various disciplines such as art history, archaeology or Byzantine studies. The forces that promised salvation and protection from the dangers of the sea were of great relevance. For a variety of Mediterranean relationships, veneration of saints in texts, images and other media played an important role: patron saints and patrons who were associated with the sea and called for help. In different milieus, among merchants, sailors or coastal inhabitants, these saints associated with the sea experienced special veneration.
