Our Program
The publishing house Ferdinand Schöningh is one of the leading academic publishers in the German-speaking world. Today, its program focuses primarily on History and Theology, but also on Linguistics, Literature and Pedagogics.
Our textbooks and study books are published in the Uni-Taschenbücher (utb) series, which are distributed by the publishing cooperation of the same name in Stuttgart.
History
The publishing house Ferdinand Schöningh has become especially renowned in the field of Contemporary History: with publications on National Socialism, the History of Violence and Perpetrator Research as well as Military and War History, the publishing house is leading since many years.
Another focus of our publishing program is the field of Eastern European History, with emphasis on the history of Germany's relations with the states of Eastern Central Europe.
Increasingly important is the subject of Ancient History. In addition to relevant monographs, source editions particularly contribute to the profile of the program.
Within the scope of the program's thematic focal points– such as the History of Eastern Europe or the History of War and Conflict – the epoch of the early modern era is, alongside Ancient History and Contemporary History, increasingly coming into focus as well.
The scholarly foundation of the history program is largely based on numerous renowned series, although the portfolio is constantly being expanded. In addition to titles that are primarily aimed at a specialist academic audience, the publishing house's profile also includes books which address a broader readership and are also widely received by the media and interested members of the public in the context of current debates.
Theology
In scientific Catholic Theology, Ferdinand Schöningh is the leading German-language publisher. Recently, ecumenical expansion has been a major focus of program development. In addition to Catholic Theology, which continues to be an important section of the program, Ferdinand Schöningh now also concentrates on Protestant Theology and the Orthodox Churches. Recently, new series in Patristics and ancient and medieval anthropology have joint the portfolio.
Traditionally, the theological program focuses primarily on the History of Churches and Religions, with a strong emphasis on the German-speaking world.
Other central areas are Dogmatics, Image Theology and Christian Social Ethics. The program's openness to interdisciplinary questions of Religious Studies and Religious History as well as to the dialogue between Judaism, Christianity and Islam is represented by the contributions to Comparative Theology.
Worth mentioning is also the area of Ecclesiastical and Religious Law, represented for example by the Archiv für katholisches Kirchenrecht or the Lexikon für Kirchen- und Religionsrecht, whose reputation and importance as canonical reference works extends far beyond the borders of Germany. The latter, in addition to its focus on Christian Churches, Judaism and Islam, also stands for the development towards new forms of publishing, which, under the heading of digital availability take into account the current changes in scholarly work: all volumes are available both as a printed edition and as an XML-based database.
Pedagogics
Milestones in the program area of General Scientific Pedagogics are the Handbuch der Erziehungswissenschaft, Hauptwerke der Pädagogik and the series Kultur und Bildung. The series Theorieforum der Pädagogik und Pädagogik – Perspektiven stands for an innovative orientation of pedagogy.
Linguistics and Literary Studies
In Linguistics and Literary Studies, the publishing house Ferdinand Schöningh has gained a reputation mainly for its works on Romanticism. Especially associated with the name Ferdinand Schöningh are the historical-critical editions of the works of Friedrich Schlegel and August Wilhelm Schlegel as well as the linguistic writings of Wilhelm von Humboldt and, last but not least, the Athenäum.
