This article deals with the principal problems in the historiography of Russian annals. A.A. Shakhmatov was the leading scholar in this field at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, and his methodology remained at the centre of academic discussions for the entire century. K. Lachmann had been a leading figure in textual criticism prior to Shakhmatov. This article is the first attempt at a sustained comparison of the work of Lachmann and Shakhmatov.
